Fehmi (in The Open-Focus Brain) teaches one to notice the spaces-between — the spaces between places in the body, between words on a page and then between letters in a word. It seems to prevent squeezing too hard on an experience. That might be very different from what the authors call FA, or focused attention? At least I have found it helpful in loosening my attention without just letting it drift off.
